When Robin Williams told his father about his desire to become an actor, his dad advised him to study welding — “just in case.” My own parents urged me to become a teacher, but it wasn’t because they noticed the early signs of a gifted educator. My parents’ dreams for me were far more practical. Going into teaching was a Plan B — in case something happened to my future husband, I’d have something to “fall back on.”
<br <!--more--/> />
Most of the time my parents did get it right. But everything I learned about achieving career bliss I learned by actually ignoring my well-meaning but cautious parents. That’s because, if you aspire to find work that you truly love, some of what your parents taught you could actually work against you.

Here are three childhood lessons every adult career changer should ignore as well as some exercises to help you achieve your goal.

Old Advice: Grow up
New Advice: Don’t

If you were still throwing tantrums at 12, be thankful your parents told you to “grow up.” But, if you want to recapture the experience of getting deliriously lost in a favorite pastime, growing up isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Lots of people, director Steven Spielberg among them, knew from a young age what they wanted to do when they grew up. Your own childhood may well contain clues to a new career direction.

Make a list of all the things you were really into as a kid. Did you love to build forts? Sing? Compete in science fairs? Draw? Do magic tricks? Learn about dinosaurs? Tell jokes? Watch scary movies? Play sports? Play dress-up? Play video games? Play school?

What do your answers tell you? How might you build on these childhood interests today?

Old Advice: Follow the straight and narrow road
New Advice: Wind your way to happiness

You probably got the message growing up to always follow the straight and narrow road. Good advice for staying on the right side of authority, bad advice for coming up with “outside the box” career options. That’s because it is often the wide road with lots of detours that lead to the most interesting places. Say you wanted to turn your love of astronomy into your vocation, what career destination would you most likely wind up at, if, vocationally-speaking, you took the straight and narrow road? Astronomer. Right? A fine occupation, but it is just one of many options.

Here’s where what Patrick Combs calls his “Super-Simple, Unique & Weird Job Idea Jogger” can help. Even though his book, Major In Success, is aimed at college students, his idea jogging exercise can help anyone looking to chart a new course.

To start, fill in the blanks in the following sentence: A great job would be [verb] in the [your interest] field. The astronomy-lover who also enjoys reading would write: A great job would be reading in the astronomy field. This might lead to such off-the-beaten-path careers as: Editor of an astronomy magazine, NASA researcher or author of books about the latest astronomy developments. Change the verb to drawing, says Combs, and see what ideas get jogged. You could: Illustrate astronomy books. Design observatories. Map star systems. Create science fiction paintings, murals, or coloring books.

Old Advice: Never talk to strangers
New Advice: Talk to lots and lots of strangers

“Never talk to strangers” is good advice if you’re approached in a dark alley, bad advice if you need encouragement to quit your programming job to become a park ranger. In fact, if the choice is to seek out support from a group of total strangers or from your own family, go with the strangers. The reason, says career counselor Barbara Sher, is that “almost any stranger would respect your dreams more easily than our family does.” To prove it, try this assignment from her book I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was.

Tell a group of strangers the most offbeat dream you can think of — like raising Dalmatians in the Himalayas. Tell them, however, that you don’t yet have any contacts in Tibet. Not only will they be interested, says Sher, “they’ll even try to solve your problem.”

Now, she says, try the same experiment with your family by announcing that you’re going to quit your corporate job and sign on as crew on a clam boat off Rhode Island [or the reverse]. Observe whether they “drop their forks before or after they scramble to talk you out of your ‘folly’.”

If you’re ready for a big career change, maybe it’s time you actually do get bigger than your career confining britches. It can be as simple as re-igniting your childhood passions, exploring a more creative career search path, and seeking out the right people to encourage your dreams.

Oh, on the wearing clean underwear thing in case you’re ever in an accident — your mom was right.

Should you be doing a search for Microsoft authorised training, you’ll obviously be expecting training organisations to offer a large selection of the finest learning programmes to be had. Additionally you might like to talk in detail on the sort of careers you might go for when you’ve finished studying, and the type of individual that work could suit. Most students like to discuss what they might be good at. Having selected the career path you want, an applicable training course must be singled out that’s reflects your current skills and aptitude. You should expect to be offered a bespoke package for you as an individual.

Accredited simulation materials and exam preparation packages are vital – and must be sought from your course provider. Confirm that the simulated exams are not only asking questions on the right subjects, but also asking them in the way that the actual final exam will pose them. This really messes up trainees if they’re met with completely different formats and phraseologies. Be sure to ask for testing modules that will allow you to verify your knowledge at any point. Practice exams will help to boost your attitude – so you’re much more at ease with the real thing.

Look at the points below and pay great regard to them if you think the marketing blurb about an ‘Exam Guarantee’ sounds great value:

In this day and age, we have to be a little more ‘marketing-savvy’ – and the majority of us ought to cotton on to the fact that we’re actually paying for it (it isn’t free or out of the goodness of their hearts!) Trainees who go in for their examinations when it’s appropriate, paying for them just before taking them are much better placed to get through first time. They are thoughtful of what they’ve paid and prepare more appropriately to be ready for the task.

Isn’t it outrageous to have to pay your college up-front for examination fees? Hold on to your money and pay for the exam at the appropriate time, instead of paying any mark-up – and sit exams more locally – not at somewhere of their bidding. What’s the point in paying early for examination fees when you don’t need to? A great deal of money is made because training colleges are charging all their exam fees up-front – and then cashing in when they’re not all taken. Re-takes of any failed exams via companies who offer an ‘Exam Guarantee’ inevitably are heavily regulated. They will insist that you take pre-tests first till you’ve proven conclusively that you can pass.

Average exam fees were 112 pounds or thereabouts twelve months or so ago when taken at Prometric or VUE centres around the United Kingdom. So don’t be talked into shelling out hundreds or thousands of pounds more to have ‘an Exam Guarantee’, when it’s no secret that the responsible approach is a regular, committed, study programme, with an accredited exam preparation system.

Trainees hoping to kick off a career in IT usually haven’t a clue which route is best, or even which market to achieve their certification in. After all, if you’ve got no understanding of the IT sector, how are you equipped to know what someone in a particular field does each day? Let alone decide on which educational path provides the best chances for you to get there. Generally, the way to deal with this problem appropriately stems from a full discussion of a variety of topics:

* Your individual personality and interests – the sort of work-centred jobs you enjoy or dislike.

* Are you aiming to pull off a closely held objective – like becoming self-employed sometime soon?

* How important is salary to you – is it of prime importance, or is enjoying your job a lot higher on your priority-list?

* When taking into account all that Information Technology encapsulates, you really need to be able to see what’s different.

* You should also think long and hard about any sacrifices you’ll need to make, as well as what commitment and time you’ll put into your education.

To bypass all the jargon and confusion, and uncover the most viable option for your success, have an informal chat with an industry expert and advisor; someone that will cover the commercial realities and truth as well as each certification.

A fatal Faux-Pas that we encounter all too often is to focus entirely on getting a qualification, and take their eye off the desired end-result. Training academies are brimming over with direction-less students that chose an ‘interesting’ course – instead of the program that would surely get them the career they desired. Avoid becoming one of those unfortunate students who choose a training program which looks like it could be fun – and end up with a plaque on the wall for something they’ll never enjoy.

You must also consider your leanings around career development, earning potential, plus your level of ambition. It makes sense to understand what industry expects from you, what qualifications will be required and how you’ll gain real-world experience. The best advice for students is to speak to an experienced advisor before following a particular retraining course. This is required to ensure it has the required elements for that career path.

Today I want to encourage you to keep your eye on the ball. Get back to the basics. Focus on the fundamentals. Remember what really matters. Identify the simple principles and actions that are crucial to your success at work and at home. Simplify, Focus, Execute – Jon Gordon, author of The No Complaining Rule: Positive Ways to Deal with Negativity at Work

If you’ve been working for any length of time in any capacity or industry, you have likely faced stressful points that make you want to scream. But as you’ve been working for any length of time, you know that a “pillow” is the only one who can take those screams, in a calm and supportive way.

What we get from these experiences is a chance to step back and reflect on what’s happening and how much we really control what’s happening. No, I’m not speaking in riddles; but I am making a point.

It’s unlikely that this is the first or last time that we will experience challenges in our workday, workplace or work life. It’s how we rise to the occasion and use those challenges, which enable us to grow and do more. You’ve heard the saying, “the best revenge is living well?” Well the best response to the challenge is “using it to make you stronger, more agile and successful.” How can you get to this point without investing a small fortune in pillows?

Take the time to look at the challenge, outside of its occurrence and when you’ve had a glass of wine, cup of tea, playtime with your children or pet. You’ll know when you’ve released the resistance and emotion attached to the challenge. Then you can apply some personal reflection to it.

Look back at the other times when you’ve experienced this kind of stress or challenge. What was happening? How did you feel through it? What did you learn from it? How are you different as a result? Let me give you a personal example to clarify how this can work.

I worked for a tough, tough manager. She was someone no one wanted to deal with. She has a very sharp mind and if you don’t keep up with her, she eats you for lunch. I finally (through lots of tears and headaches) learned to go with her flow. I learned it wasn’t going to get me anywhere otherwise. When I moved to a new job, she fully supported my promotion. Later, she asked me to come back to work for her again. Well, this is something no one had ever done! Now she was an executive and even tougher! I liked her and I KNEW her so I decided, “heck yeah I’ll work for you again.” I had many, new, challenging moments with her. But she pointed out that I was now a different person than in the past and had grown to “manage” her well. What was it?

I reflected on previous challenges with her and how I got through it; and who I was as a result. I also realized it was the meaning that I was attaching to her challenges. When I realized it had nothing to do with who I was or how talented I was, it no longer bothered me, personally. That was the growth she saw in me. It turned out to be the best manager-employee relationship I’ve had. (And yes, I would work for her, now a Vice President, again!)

So don’t discount the challenges that you face. Use them! Here are some tips to help!

Tip #1 – Nothing has meaning, save the meaning you give it. We always want the best for ourselves; however in our minds we make things worse than they really are. How? We give it a negative meaning vs. trying to create something positive instead. We do this, mostly, so that we’re not disappointed. So why not try a different approach and by giving it a positive meaning. Decide your own meaning and you’ll be more than surprised with the result! What do you have to lose since you’re thinking anyway? smile

Tip #2 – What doesn’t kill us, makes us stronger. This is a mantra for a lot of people today. But we don’t have to be this dramatic to realize that we are much stronger than we think. Using just a tiny bit of reflection, you’ll see you’ve been down this road before and it’s always worked out for you! (or you wouldn’t be reading these words…you’d be…well, you know…)

Tip #3 – Declare, this will be for my benefit! What if we just made the declaration, right here, right now, that no matter what, I will take more from this event than it could possibly take from me! This stirs your energy and gets you focused in a powerful new direction.

Using these three tips will help you return to basics when you’re in the throes of a challenge, in your career and life. But let’s not kid ourselves; you can’t do this while you’re screaming into that pillow! After, while you’re re-fluffing it!
